What Do Women Really Want

By Christian Pedersen

Exactly what do women truly want? This question continues to be puzzling (or haunting) men since time immemorial.

I came across a joke on the net that spoke volumes about the predominant feeling men often have about women. Namely that regardless of how much you, the man, gives to your woman, she still wants more and isn't satisfied.

It goes like this: A store that sells new husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch: you may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband...

On each floor the signs on the doors read: Floor 1 - These men have jobs. Floor 2 - These males have jobs and love kids. Floor 3 - These males have jobs, love kids, and are also very nice looking. "Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes toward the fourth floor and sign reads:

Floor 4 - These males have jobs, love kids, are drop-dead good looking and assist with the housework. "Oh, mercy me!" she exclaims, "I can hardly stand it!" Still, she travels to the fifth floor and sign reads, Floor 5 - These guys have jobs, love kids, are drop-dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak. She actually is so tempted to stay, but she goes toward the sixth floor and the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 3,261,496,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Many thanks for shopping at the Husband Store.

Within our relationship workshops, also in my work coaching men on relationship, it is abundantly clear that most men really have no clue what women really want.

We men THINK what women want is something along the lines of a great income, an excellent house, great health insurance, good school for the children, some vacations, some date nights, flowers here and there, and maybe a bit of romance.

And we do our damnedest to provide that. Most men work their tails off to provide all of that. Which is wonderful but often totally misses the mark, since it does not truly satisfy any woman. That reminds me of another joke we just told at our last relationship workshop: To prove his love for her, he climbed the highest mountain, swam across the widest ocean, and traversed the hottest desert barefoot! But she left him.he was never home!

In our desire to provide all those things we THINK she wants, we men often end up NOT giving her exactly what she REALLY wants. LIke the love-struck hero in the joke, it doesn't matter how much 'stuff' we can provide, how many accomplishments we can perform, if we're never really there to just BE with her.

Which brings us to what women really want. I'm obviously not giving an exhaustive list here, but at the very least this can set the men on the right track to actually giving her what she wants.

What women want above all else is a man who is PRESENT along with her. Who can present her with his full and undivided attention. Who are able to love her with his eyes and his hands and his words. What she really wants is all the items that doesn't need a price tag on it. That's not to convey she doesn't appreciate everything her man provides, but the beautiful house and the great income is gravy. If it comes at the expense of her man not being present together with her, she'll remain unsatisfied.

For us men, ironically, what she really wants is the last thing we think to give. Most men are DOERS. It's much easier of us to have a specific, tangible target, like income, or a new house, to aim for. We know how to do that. Just work harder, get promoted, make more money, grow the business, keep moving, persist, and work harder. Whereas a fuzzy goal like being present with her is much more difficult to grasp and quantify.

But yet, when all is said and done, what she wants essentially the most is your presence, your undivided attention and your undying devotion.
